논문 제출 양식 Extended Abstract? 그냥 Abstract 길게 쓰는 건가?

아직 나홀로 학부연구생으로 고단한 나날을 보내고 있던 어느날.

교수님께서 나름 메이저인 유럽 학회에 논문을 내라면서 주제를 던져주셨다.

 

학회 홈페이지에 들어가서 제출 기한과 규정, 양식 등을 살펴보니 10월OO일까지 Extended Abstract 양식으로

제출하라고 되어있었으며, 예시자료도 없이 아주 단촐한 Template만 주어져있었다.

 

그래서 나는 아무 생각도 없이 그냥 자세한 Abstract를 썼다.

500-600자 정도의 Extended Abstract를 쓰라고 했으니 그냥 자세하게 쓰면 되겠지라고 생각했다.

그렇게 제출 마감 전날 자정쯤에 '더 이상은 못 쓰겠다'라고 생각하며 마무리하던 찰나에 불길한 예감이 들었다.

다 쓴 글을 읽어보니 너무 이상한 거다. 이런 걸로 Accept여부를 결정한다고?

 

'나름 메이저 컨퍼런스에서 이런 걸 제출하라고 할리가 있나?'

 

이런 생각이 들자마자 Extended Abstract에 대해서 자세히 조사해보았다.

알고보니 Extended Abstract는 Abstract와 Introduction, 간단한 배경이론, 시뮬레이션 결과와 요약된 결론, 참조문헌들로 이루어진 글이었다. 그야말로 6-7페이지의 풀페이퍼를 2페이지로 요약한 요약본을 의미했다. 

 

반면에 나는 딸랑 한페이지도 채 못채운 쓸데없이 긴 Abstract만 적어놨으니, 밤을 새서라도 초안을 다시 구성해야 했다.

아래 글은 Extended Abstract와 그냥 Abtract, 풀페이퍼의 차이와 정의에 대해서 설명된 자료이다.

What are the differences among "abstracts," "extended abstracts," and "full papers?„

어떤 학회들은 extended abstract라는 걸 요구하는데 Abstract와 extended abstract, full paper의 차이는 무엇인가?

 

▪Generalized:The answer could be conference specific but generally a full paper is about 10-15 pages long, an extended abstract would be 1-4 pages long (generally 1 or 2 pages with figures and explanations) and an abstract is generallya few hundredwords long.

 

일반적인 경우: 학회에서 정확히 규정되서 요구하는 것에 따라서 다소 다르긴 하지만 보통 풀페이퍼는 10-15페이지 길이이고 extended abstract는 1-4페이지 정도의 길이다. 이 중에서 보통 1-2페이지는 Figure와 설명들이 차지한다. 그리고 Abstract는 수백 단어 정도로 이루어진다.

 

▪An abstract is a preliminary submission that summarizes the contribution of a paper. There are usually strict limits on the length of an abstract, either in terms of words or of total characters (rarely do they exceed 1000 words; they are often substantially shorter than this(150 –350).

 

Abtract는 논문이 세상에 기여하는 내용에 대한 요약본을 예비 제출하는 것이다. 보통 엄격한 길이 제한이 있다. 보통 150-350단어정도로 제한되며 아주 예외적으로 1000단어를 초과하는 경우도 있다.

 

▪An extended abstract and a full paper are nearly the same; the primary difference is that an extended abstract tends to be somewhat shorter than a full paper; I've seen extended abstracts from 2 pages up to 6 pages, while conference papers run from 4 up to about 12 or 15, depending on the space allotted

 

extended abstract와 풀페이퍼는 거의 비슷하다. 주요한 차이점은 extended abtract는 풀페이퍼보다 어느 정도 더 짧다는 점이다. 내가 봐온 것들은 대부분 2페이지에서 6페이지 사이였는데, 풀페이퍼는 4에서 12 또는 15페이지 여쓴ㄴ데 말이다. 

 

An extended abstract is not simply a long abstract. The extended abstract should contain references, comparisons to related works and other details expected in a scientific paper but not in an abstract.

extended abstract는 그냥 단순히 긴 abstract가 아니다. extended abstract는 참조 문헌들을 포함해야 하고 비슷한 연구들과의 비교내용 들이 있어야 한다. 그리고 보통 Abstract에선 볼 수 없는 논리적이고 과학적인 세부사항들이 포함되어야한다.

extended abstract는 아이디어와 그 중요성이 한시간 이내로 읽을 수 있게 쓰여진 페이퍼이다. extended abstract를 쓰는 것이 그냥 연구 문서를 쓰는 것보다 힘들 때가 있다. 생략되어도 될만한 것들과 아닌 것들을 구분하기가 힘들기 때문이다.

이상적인 제출본은 리뷰어가 읽기 시작해서 5분이내에 흥미로워 하고, 15분 이내에 즐거워하며, 45분 이내에 충분히 만족할만한 글이다. 만약 당신의 abstract가 이런 테스트를 통과하지 못한다면 당신의 연구가 얼마나 좋고 중요하던 상관없이 리젝 당할 수가 있다. 페이지 제한 때문에 서론, 예시, 결론의 중요성을 간과하고 리뷰어의 이해를 도와줄 중요한 이미지를 제거하지 마라. 기억해라. 당신의 논문은 당신 연구에 대해서 잘모르는 수많은 비전문가들에게 읽혀지는 것이다. 그러니 expanded abstract는 반드시 명료하고 직설적이고 이해하기 쉬운 방식이어야 하며, 독자들을 동화시켜야 한다.

그렇게만 하면 대중들에게 당신의 연구가 더 매력적으로 느껴질 것이다.
